Chapter 24: Not a Confession

Lukas was already on his feet.

He stood between the ladder and Greta in his T-shirt and sweatpants.

"Get down off my ladder," he said.

Tanner laughed and went back down, and missed the last rung, and caught himself on the skiff.

Lukas went down after him.

At the bottom he looked up at Greta once and shook his head.

Stay.

She stayed.

She knelt back from the edge of the loft, in the dark, where she could see the workbench and the light.

The dog stood stiff-legged by the stove with its hackles up.

"Off the boat," Lukas said.

Tanner took his hand off the skiff and looked at it.

"Cute," he said. "You building a boat for Nils? That's cute."

Lukas reached up and switched on the work light over the bench.

Then he took his phone out of his pocket, pressed the screen and set it face up beside the vise.

"I'm recording this," he said. "Whatever you say in this house tonight, you're saying to that phone."

Tanner looked at the phone.

Then he laughed so hard he had to sit down on a sawhorse.
