The club hall had two sides again, but nobody sat on either of them.
It was the first Saturday of October, a year to the night after the wedding.
The long tables ran straight across the dance floor with no wall between them.

Children ran between the chairs.

The room laughed.

He lifted his glass to my mother.
"I would pay it twice."
My mother put her hand on his arm.
"The war is over," she said. "The pier is full. My daughter has a boat, and your son has sense."
She raised her glass.
"To the year we kept."
"To the year we kept," said three hundred voices.
I drank, and when I lowered the glass Riccardo was standing in front of me.
He had come across the room from the Italian side.
He wore a navy suit, and he had shaved, and he held one hand closed at his side.
