Chapter 9: The Rosario
The Rosario sat on steel stands in the Point Judith boatyard with a blue tarp tied over her deck, and it was snowing.
Big slow flakes came down through the yard lights and settled on the tarp and on his hair.
I had driven us there in my truck, because he was in no state to drive.
I had not said a word on the way.
Now we stood at the top of a ladder in the dark, and I pulled the tarp back and opened the cabin hatch.
"My father's," I said. "She's been out of the water since October."
He climbed in behind me.
The cabin was a small wooden room with a narrow V-berth in the bow, built into the curve of the hull.
It smelled of cedar and cold diesel, and under that, faintly, of my father's tobacco.
I had not been inside it since the funeral.
I lit the little kerosene heater my father kept bolted by the door, and it ticked and caught.
Orange light filled the cabin.
Riccardo stood with his head bent under the low beams, still in his church suit, still pale.
"I don't want to talk about whatever that was in the church," I said. "I want to stop looking at your hands shake."
"All right."
"You said you'd say all of it, after Mass."
His eyes came up.
"I did."
"Say it."
He took a long breath.
"I want to take your dress off with my teeth," he said, low. "I want to put my mouth on every inch you'll let me."
I felt it go straight through my stomach.
"Keep going."
"I want to be inside you until neither of us remembers the church," Riccardo said.
"I want you to say my name, and I want to hear you mean it."
I crossed the cabin and put my arms around his neck.
"Take off your jacket," I said.
He did.
I took off my coat and let it fall, and then I stood in front of him in the heater's glow.
"Iannotti," I said, quietly.
"Not that name," he said.
"Not yet."
He went still, and then he smiled, and it changed his whole face.
"Don't kneel tonight," I said.
"No?" he said.
"Lie down with me. Here, on the bunk. I want you on top of me, where I can see you."
"You want me to lead?"
"I want you to stay," I said. "And I want you to decide."
