Chapter 8: Swab

The fire went out on Wednesday night, between one breath and the next, while Si-wan slept with his forehead on Eun-ho's shoulder.

Eun-ho lay awake in the dark afterward, listening to his own body, and it was quiet.

It was the quietest it had been in six years.

By Thursday at 8:55, he was standing in a line in the corridor of the thirty-first floor in a clean grey suit, with his collar buttoned to the top, waiting to be swabbed.

There were nineteen of them.

The Registry's inspector sat at a folding table outside the boardroom: a young woman, a beta, with a tablet and a glass jar of cotton sticks.

She said the same thing to everyone.

"Chin up, please. One swipe at the nape. Thank you."

The analyst in front of Eun-ho was shaking so hard the table rattled.

Eun-ho knew exactly how he felt.

At the far end of the corridor, by the window, the Vice Chairman stood with his gold pen and his round glasses and a smile like warm milk.

Jung-gook was watching the line.

Not the line, Eun-ho realized.

Him.

And behind Eun-ho, at the glass door of his own office, with his arms folded and a charcoal suit pressed sharp enough to cut paper, Si-wan was watching Jung-gook.

Si-wan hadn't looked at Eun-ho once.

Not when Eun-ho came in, not when he took his place in line.

For three days Si-wan had held him, and fed him.

He had said Eun-ho's name into his mouth in a voice that made his knees go.
