Chapter 15: Bryn, Mine
The auction was set for the night of the Hunter's Moon, in the lodge great hall, closing at moonrise.
Colt had timed it to the minute.
The second I won my bet, there'd be no house left for the bet to save.
Gunnar read the flyer sitting up in bed with his hair flat on one side.
"Opening bid," he said. "Did it say how much?"
"A hundred and fifty thousand."
He was quiet.
He didn't have a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Neither did I.
"Then we don't buy it," he said.
"We buy it."
"With what?"
"With everybody."
Fern caught on right away.
"A pack collection," she said, slapping dough on the counter. "Everybody puts in. The Pup House belongs to whoever put in a dollar."
"Can we do that?"
"It's a public auction. Anybody can bid. Nobody said a bidder has to be one person."
We put a pickle jar on the lunch counter that afternoon.
Fern wrote on it in marker: SAVE THE PUP HOUSE. NO PUP LEAVES.
The pack mothers came first, the ones who'd sat on Gunnar's porch.
Then their husbands, with folded twenties and no eye contact.
The cashier who'd rung me up at town price walked over on her break and put in a hundred-dollar bill.
"I had orders," she said. "I didn't like them."
The old mechanic put in an envelope that turned out to hold eleven hundred dollars in tens.
"Truck noise money," he said.
The cash would never reach a hundred and fifty, and everybody knew it.
So Fern made a stack of pledge slips.
Every grown wolf in Blackfork has a share in the pack land fund. You can't spend it, but you can sign it over to a pack purpose with your name on the line.
By the third day there was a clipboard by the register, and the slips were three inches thick.
