Chapter 16: The Landing

The Machias Grange hall smelled of floor wax and woodsmoke, and eleven Alphas sat at one long table under the stage.

I walked in with my father's buoy under my arm and the tooth in my coat pocket.

The Chair sat at the center of the table, an old woman from the Penobscot pack, with a white braid.

Before her lay a ledger the size of a church Bible, which everyone called the Book.

Armand stood with me in the vestibule before we went in.

He wore his father's black wool coat, and he had combed his beard.

I laid my palm flat on his chest, over the saw scar, the way I had in the sleet.

His heart was hammering.

"Third row," I said. "Aisle seat."

"Where you can see me."

"Where I can see you."

He nodded.

Carlene Dow came through the vestibule behind us in a green wool dress, with her small hand tucked into Josiah's arm.

She smiled at me with the whole width of her face.

"I'll hang my buoy on your father's rail, sweetheart," she murmured as she passed. "It'll look nice there."

I did not answer her.

Josiah gave me a gentle nod and said, "Mercy. Good to see you well."

Thirty Hall wolves filed in behind him in their good jackets.

The Hall's Beta came last, big and gray-haired, with his hat in both hands and his eyes on the floor.
