Chapter 19: The Supper

The Ness barn had been swept for the first time in thirty years.

Somebody had hung strings of work lights from the rafters.

Long plank tables ran down the middle in four rows, with paper cloths and Mason jars of wheat stalks.

By five that Saturday the pack had filled it.

Two hundred people stood and sat and shouted over the noise.

There were wives with casseroles and hands in clean shirts.

Children ran between the benches, and old men sat in the corners with their hats on their knees.

The whole Dunmore Farmers Co-op had come to the harvest-end supper.

Halvard sat at the head table in his good suit, upright and gray.

He had come out of the house that afternoon on my mother's arm.

He had said he'd never missed a supper and he wouldn't start for a bank.

My mother sat beside him in her church dress.

She had baked all eleven of the pies herself.

Dagny sat at his other side with her cane across her lap and her opera glasses in her pocket.

I had a seat three places down.

Soren was in the chair beside me.

He had asked, in front of the table, whether it was taken, and I had said it wasn't.

His hand rested on the plank between us, an inch from mine, and he did not move it.
