Chapter 18: The Ladder
The Ladder Walk is seven rungs, and the seventh is a platform with a rail, nine feet off the floor of the Copper Harbor hall.
The Luna-elect climbs it to be shown to the pack, and the Alpha waits at the bottom.
I learned this from the Beta, who had driven the ladder down on the roof of her car.
"Why a ladder?" I said.
"It was a tree in the old days," said the Beta. "Then there was a fire code."
We set it up on Hilkka's lawn on Thursday, and Petra held the bottom.
Each rung had a word stenciled beside it, which the climber had to say aloud as she reached it.
Rung one said STEADFAST.
Rung two said GRATEFUL.
Rung three said WELCOME, and rung four said KIND, and I stopped reading the others because rung five said OBEDIENT.
"I won't say five," I said.
"It's a custom," said the Beta.
"I will say 'listening,'" I said.
"It's stenciled," said the Beta.
"Then I'll climb past it," I said.
Run one was in my work boots, and I said the words in a pleasant voice and reached the top on a wobble.
