Chapter 19: The Counterclaim
The Summer Moot of the Upper Peninsula meets in a folding-chair hall in Marquette.
Ulla Hakala filed a complaint there against me on the first morning.
It was titled NOTICE OF RETAINED GIFTS.
It was nine pages long and had a table of contents.
I sat in the second row beside Hilkka with my clipboard on my knee.
The Chair of the Moot read the first paragraph aloud in a voice with nothing in it at all.
"The Alpha's Mother alleges that Aino Laitinen has retained six items of pack property following her release," Soren read.
"Item one, a wooden spoon with an A burned into the handle."
"Nils has the spoon," I said.
"You are not recognized," said the Chair.
"I'm the respondent."
"You are recognized," Soren said, and I understood that he was holding a gavel and trying not to look at me.
Thirty Alphas and Betas sat in rows of metal chairs.
Ulla stood at the front with the binder, in a gray suit.
Nils sat beside her.
He had not slept since the lane, and it showed.
"The spoon was returned on the dock, June fourth," I said. "I have the tally."
