Chapter 20: What the Notebook Said
I took the notebook out of the glovebox and sat down on the passenger seat with the door open.
The cover said FORMS.
I opened it.
The first page said DRAFT 1 at the top, in pencil, in square capitals.
Under it was one line.
"Good evening."
He had written thirty-one of them.
Each had a number, a date and a grade in the margin, in the same hand: BAD. WORSE. CORRECT BUT DEAD.
I started to read them out loud, because I am a person who reads things out loud.
"Draft four," I said, to the empty truck cab. "'Your hands are very competent.'"
"Thank you," I said, in my own voice. "Next."
"Draft nine. 'I find you extremely competent.' Crossed out. 'Extremely,' crossed out. 'Competent,' crossed out. That leaves 'I find you,'" I said.
I put my hand over my mouth.
"Draft fourteen," I said. "'I request the privilege of your company at a table.' Granted. With a wobble."
I turned the page.
"Draft twenty-two. 'If you ever need a door planed.' I have three doors, Soren," I told the cab.
