Chapter 21: The Gavel

Soren's POV

At nine o'clock the next morning I called the Moot to order.

Then I tried to resign the Chair in the wrong order three times.

I want that on the record.

I had not slept.

I had sat in the truck in the Marquette lot from midnight until four.

I read the page with the number thirty-two on it, which was still empty.

At four I understood that I was not going to write it.

I was going to have to say it, with nothing in my hands, to someone who was not there.

Thirty Alphas and Betas sat in folding chairs facing the table.

My gavel lay in front of me, and the Moot's minute book lay beside it.

The Secretary of the Moot, a tidy man in a cardigan, read the minutes of the day before.

I stood up.

"I resign the Chair," I said.

"Chair, we're in the reading of the minutes," said the Secretary.

"I understand," I said.

"A resignation is New Business."

"Then I resign it as New Business."

"We are not in New Business, Chair," said the Secretary. "We're in the reading."
