Chapter 11: The Cup

"Monkshood," Torin said aloud, and set the cup down on the napkin.

Nobody at the table made a sound.

"Enough in this cup to stop a grown wolf's heart," he said. "Enough in a pregnant woman to end her pup before she felt anything but a cramp."

Margaret's hand flew to her pearls.

"That's absurd," she said. "That is absolutely absurd. I made the tea in my own kitchen."

"Then you know who else touched it," Torin said.

"The cook." She said it at once. "Our cook has been difficult since spring. He was angry about his hours. He must have done something foolish."

I had not expected how quickly she would say it.

She did not even look at the kitchen door.

"Mother," Caleb said. He was on his feet. His face had gone from gray to white. "Mother, tell me you didn't."

"Of course I didn't. How can you ask me that?"

"Because the cup was in front of Joanna."

"The cook." Margaret turned to him with tears standing in her eyes. "Caleb, I'm your mother. I poured that tea with my own two hands because I wanted her to feel welcome. Are you going to believe a stranger over me?"

"I'm not a stranger," Torin said mildly. "I'm only a man with a nose."

Hazel set her napkin on the table.

"Mother. Are you wearing your signet tonight?"

Margaret blinked.

"What?"

"You've worn that ring every day of my life. It isn't on your hand."

"I took it off to bake."

"You made the cake this morning. It's afternoon."

"Hazel, what is this?"

Hazel took out her phone, laid it on the table between the teapot and the lemon cake, and pressed play.

The tilted video filled the screen.

Poppy's face in a mirror. Margaret's hand smoothed her collar. A gold brooch, pinned straight.
