Chapter 20: The Vote
The boardroom had a table for twenty and nine men and women sitting at it.
Hedvig Ekeberg sat at the head, in pearl gray, with her lawyer at her elbow and a laptop open in front of her.
She smiled when the doors opened.
"Ingmar. Mr. Wrobel. How lovely. Do sit."
"We will stand," Ingmar said.
Bartek stood beside him, one pace behind, with the gray folder in his hands.
The board looked at them.
Some of the faces he knew from the gala and the Joliet call, the woman with the pearls and the gray COO with his lanyard.
Some he had never seen.
Every one of them had heard about the lobby.
"Then we may begin," Hedvig said. "This is a review of conduct under Article Nine. I have placed evidence before each member, and I will ask the board to watch a short recording."
"The recording of what?" the woman with the pearls asked.
"Of what my nephew does in his home with an employee."
A murmur ran around the table.
Hedvig touched a key.
The big screen at the end of the room lit up.
It showed a long dim room with a padded bench.
A man stood there tall and pale and naked to the waist, and another knelt in front of him, wearing a black collar.
The sound was low.
It was a man's voice saying, very quietly, "Good boy."
Nobody breathed.
Bartek stood perfectly still.
He had known it was coming.
He had known it was coming, and he had planned for it.
Still, the sight of his own back on a wall in front of a room of gray suits made his knees go soft.
Ingmar's hand closed around his wrist, hard.
"Stop it," Ingmar said.
"Let it play," said Hedvig. "I want them to see."
"I said stop."
"You have no standing to."
"Hedvig." He did not raise his voice. "Turn it off, or I will."
She watched him for a moment.
Then, with a small regretful shrug, she pressed the key, and the screen went dark.
"Thank you," Ingmar said.
