Chapter 19: Ingmar
"Two o'clock," Ingmar said, once the lawyer had gone. "Three hours."
He stood in the doorway of his own office with the lights off and his coat still on.
Bartek came in behind him, and shut the door, and turned the lock.
The click was small and clean.
"Sit down," Bartek said.
Ingmar looked at him.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Sit. In your chair. Now."
Ingmar did not move.
The pale eyes took in Bartek's flushed face, his open collar, his hand still on the brass lock.
"You are giving me an order," he said.
"I am."
"In my office."
"You said ask for what I want." Bartek leaned back against the door. "I'm asking. Sit in the chair, Mr. Ekeberg."
For a moment the room was silent.
Then Ingmar took off his overcoat, and laid it over the sofa, and walked to the walnut desk.
He sat down in the black leather chair.
He rested his hands on the arms, long fingers spread, and looked up with an expression Bartek had never seen on him.
It was a man waiting to find out whether he would be allowed.
Bartek's pulse kicked.
He crossed the floor.
He reached into the gray folder, which he had carried up from the lobby, and took out a cheap blue polyester tie.
It was the one Ingmar had pulled from his collar on the first night.
Bartek had found it in Ingmar's coat pocket on Saturday.
"I kept it," Ingmar said quietly.
"I took it back," Bartek said.
"It was a terrible tie," Ingmar said.
"It's a very good tie. I'm about to prove it," Bartek said.
He came around the chair and stood behind it.
He took Ingmar's right wrist and drew it behind the back of the chair, and then the left, and wound the blue cloth around both.
He knotted it, quick and exact.
Ingmar said nothing, and breathed.
