Chapter 18: Lobby

At eight-forty on Monday morning the lobby of the Ekeberg tower held two hundred people and one revolving door.

Bartek stood outside the glass with a gray folder under his arm.

He had slept four hours.

Beside him on the pavement, in a charcoal overcoat and a plain white shirt, Ingmar looked at the lobby.

"They will all be there," he said.

"I know," Bartek said.

"They will see us come in together."

"That's the idea," Bartek said.

"Bartek." Ingmar's voice was low. "On the recording. On Saturday."

"What about it?"

"You spoke to the lens. You said a great many things." His eyes stayed on the glass. "I have to ask. How much of the rest was for her?"

Bartek turned to look at him.

Under the hard morning light, the scar through his eyebrow showed white, and there was a tightness in his mouth.

It was the face of a man bracing for a no.

"The words were for her," Bartek said. "I wanted her to hear them."

"And the rest?" Ingmar asked.

"The rest was for you. Every second," Bartek said.

"You were very convincing."

"I'm not that good an actor," Bartek said.

"You told a camera you were twenty-five and consenting."

"I am twenty-five and consenting." Bartek took a step closer. "I was also on my knees with my mouth full, which is not a situation I can fake. Ask anyone who's ever tried."
