Chapter 22: Third Landing

The back stairwell of the Lakeview had never held so many people.

They stood on every step from the second floor to the fourth, in uniform and in their best clothes.

Sixteen members of the housekeeping staff stood in two rows along the rail, with their hands folded and their eyes bright.

A woman near the bottom held a corner of her apron to her face.

I stood on the third landing in a plain ivory dress I'd bought off a rack for ninety dollars.

My hair was pinned up and my mother's thin gold band was on my right hand, because I'd decided to wear it there.

Kit stood beside me with a bouquet of grocery-store daisies.

Ingrid stood on the step below the window in a navy dress and a corsage she had pinned on herself.

A judge in a gray cardigan, whom I had asked myself, held a paper in front of the window.

"We're here for the second time," she said, "for two people who have asked me to do the first one properly."

Someone laughed on the stairs.

Lucas came up from the second floor in a dark suit with a lemon drop in his breast pocket where a flower should have been.

His eyes found me and did not leave.

He stopped one step below the landing so that we stood level.

I held out my hand and he took it.

"Tell me when you're ready," the judge said.

"I wrote nothing," I said.

"I'd like to say something."

The judge nodded.

"I married you once with a clause," I said.
