Rochelle's POV

They didn't make a show of it.

The woman in the gray coat walked the length of the ballroom with her badge out, and the guests moved their chairs to let her through.

Chad got up off his knees before she reached him.

He brushed the carpet from his trousers and straightened his tie, and I watched him try to put the reasonable face back on.

It didn't fit anymore.

"Detective," he said. "There's been a misunderstanding about a family loan."

"Chad Lyle, I'm placing you under arrest for wire fraud and theft," the woman said. "Please turn around."

"My lawyer will be at the station within the hour."

"Then he'll have time to park."

The sergeant took his wrists and the cuffs went on with two small clicks.

Three hundred people watched in complete silence.

I stood at the lip of the stage with the microphone still in my hand.

I put it on its stand.

Chad looked up, and he found me.

"Mar," he said. His voice shook. "Baby. Tell them it's a mistake."

I came down the three steps.

I stopped an arm's length from him, near enough to see the nick on his jaw.

"You've never called me that," I said.

"Mar, please."

"Poppy called herself baby. You liked it, because it meant you were the one who had to look after her." I kept my voice level. "You called me Mar when you wanted something, and it was usually my signature."

"I loved you."

"You told Poppy you'd be rid of me in two months."

His mouth shut.
