"Alive," I said.
"Alive. He answers to this table, not to a girl's temper."
"Forty-eight hours from now."
The old man looked at his watch.
"Tuesday. Noon."
"I'll be here," I said.
I turned and walked out through the dark bakery, between the covered wedding cakes.
Nobody stopped me.
On the sidewalk the sun was so bright I had to stand still for a second.
Dario came out a minute after me.
He walked straight to me and stopped close.
He didn't touch me. There were windows across the street.
"You told them no," he said, very low.
"I told them no."
"Nobody has told that man no in twenty years."
"Was it the wrong thing?"
"It was the only thing." He opened the car door for me. "Now we have to find him."
We spent the afternoon looking.
Dario's people called every hotel in the five boroughs that would pick up for them.
My father's people called every Sicilian bakery, club and cousin in Brooklyn and New Jersey.
