Chapter 28: Room Two

The detective walked down the center aisle without hurrying, and three hundred women turned to watch her do it.

She stopped at the foot of the stage and looked up at Bree.

"Ms. Danner. I told you it wouldn't take long."

Bree took a step back and her heel caught the edge of the podium.

"This is a private event," she said. "I have permits. I have a hundred and forty paying vendors."

"You have a warrant," the detective said. "It's signed. I'm going to read you a few lines of it, because I think the room would like to hear them."

"Please don't."

"Conspiracy to commit theft by deception. Wire fraud. Forgery of a notarized statement, in the matter of Mr. Gleeson." She turned a page. "And a fresh one, from this morning."

The detective looked at the banner behind her.

"The Hold Fund. Your page for donations lists a bank account. I called the bank at eight. It is a personal checking account in your name, opened last Tuesday."

A woman in the second row said, quite clearly, "I already bought forty bouquets."

Another voice said, "I Venmo'd her last night."

Phones came up all across the hall.

Bree's eyes moved, fast, across the faces.

I watched her look for one person who still loved her, and I watched her not find one.

The girl in the cream apron took it off.

She folded it, set it on the stage steps, and walked out through the side door without looking back.

A man in a gray suit stood up in the third row.

"I'm with the venue sponsor," he said. "Our logo comes down off that banner now."

"You signed a contract," Bree said.

"We'll discuss it with your attorney."

He walked out, and three more suits followed him, and then the brides.

They went in clusters, with their mothers, holding their magazines.

Nobody was angry in a loud way.
