Chapter 17: I Forgive Nothing
I went to him on the fifth night, and I did not text first.
It was past ten, and the harbor was black and flat with a thin skin of ice at the edges.
I crossed the bridge on foot in my father's wool coat.
The key on the red cord was in my pocket, and I had made up my mind in the shower.
He was not at the plant.
The night man's chair stood empty and the loft was dark, and I turned back down the stairs with my face hot.
Then I knew where he was, because the pull in my ribs had been steady the whole walk and now it leaned.
I went out the dock door and along the river path.
His house sat at the end of the point, a long low gray house with a porch and a boat in a cradle under a tarp.
There was a light on in the kitchen.
I had never been inside it.
He opened the door before I knocked, in his shirtsleeves with a dish towel in his hand, and he looked at me as if I were weather.
"Zia," he said.
"I forgive nothing," I said.
He went still.
"I want you to hear that first," I said. "I haven't forgotten one word you said on the step. I'm not here because it's all right."
"I understand," he said.
"I'm here because I've wanted you for five days with my hands in my pockets," I said. "I'm done with that."
His breath went out of him in a rush.
"Say what you want," he said, very low.
"Shut the door."
He shut it.
"Take that off your hands."
He put the dish towel on the table without looking at it.
I stood in the middle of his kitchen and took off my father's coat, and set it over a chair.
