Chapter 23: The Last Night of the Moon

The last night of the moon fell on a Sunday, the second of November, and the Fatima hall held more wolves than it had ever held.

Six hundred of the Night Tide sat on the folding chairs and stood three deep at the walls under the paper banners.

Along the front, where the dais steps ran out, sat the visiting Alphas, three of them, from the packs at Providence and Cape Cod and the Maine coast.

They had come for the vote.

They had come to see what a Seat looked like when it was held on a shucker's word.

I walked in by the front door with my mother on my left and Bianca on my right.

I had not planned that.

Bianca had come to the shed at six in a plain black coat and said, "I'm standing with you."

My mother had looked at her for a long minute.

"You'll walk on her right, then," my mother said. "Where she can see you."

The three women from the plant line walked behind us in their good coats, with their gloves in their hands.

Behind them walked twenty more.

I heard the hall hush as we came up the aisle.

At the end of the long table, the chair sat among the elders with his silver pin.

The plant manager sat at his right hand in a good dark suit, with his folded hands and his courteous face.

Duarte stood alone on the left of the dais.

He did not look at me.

He had said he would not, and he kept it.

I stepped up on the dais and turned to face the hall.

"The Council hears the mate," the chair said, in a flat voice.

I looked out at six hundred faces.

My heart was steady.

I thought of the scale at five in the morning, and the number that does not care who is watching.

"My name is Luzia Pacheco," I said. "I weigh your catch."

A murmur went through the benches.

"I'm going to tell you three things I weighed," I said. "Then I'm going to give you my word."
