For a minute after I said it, neither of us spoke.

"He's been voting my shares for twelve years," I said again, to hear it out loud.

"Yes."

"I own fifty-one percent."

"Yes."

"Of the building I sat on the curb outside of."

"Of the building, the contracts and the chairs," Tobias said. "And the board seats that went with it, if you'd claimed them."

I thought of the cake.

I thought of forty people with plastic forks.

I thought of a man who had stood at the front of that room and clapped for a woman who worked for me.

A laugh came up in my chest, hard and short, and I pressed it down.

"There's more," Tobias said.

"Of course there is."

He picked up the folder from the arm of the couch and put it in my lap.

"I drafted this in the spring."

I opened it.

It was a purchase offer, a dozen pages long, with Reeve Partners printed at the top.

It named Lloyd Hollister as the seller of forty-one percent of Hollister Group.

The price was clean, and the terms were fair, and my chest went cold anyway.

"You were going to buy him out."

"After the Marlowe renewal. Before I knew your name was on page forty-one."

"You hired me three days after the video."

"Yes."

"You kissed me in this office last night, with that in your drawer."

"I did. I should have told you before I touched you." He didn't look away. "I'm telling you now because I won't be one more man who decides what you get to know. I wanted that company before I wanted you. That is true, and I'm not going to pretty it up."
