Chapter 28: Repaid
I stared at the text.
Then I held the phone over Matt's face until he opened one eye.
"Is it a code?" he said into the pillow.
"It's Brad. He paid it back. All of it."
He came up on one elbow and read it, squinting, with his hair flat on one side.
"Ward first," he said.
"Ward first."
He lay back down and pulled me with him.
"Good," he said. "Now be quiet. I'm off."
On Monday my lawyer called before I'd turned the oven on.
"Tasha's lawyer withdrew the lawsuit at nine this morning," she said. "All million dollars of it. He sounded like a man who'd just watched the news."
"That's it?"
"That's it. Defamation needs a lie, and the whole city just watched you tell the truth with timestamps." Her cough drop clicked. "Go bake."
On Wednesday the detective called.
"She's going to plead guilty," she said. "Her lawyer called me himself. He wants it over before the trial puts that ballroom on the stand."
"What happens to the money?"
"The bank froze Caden's Last Wish the night of the gala. A hundred and seventy-one thousand dollars." She sounded tired and pleased. "It goes back to the donors, with a court order. Every one we can find."
"And the people she already spent?"
"She pays that back for the rest of her life."
On Saturday, June 27, the back table was full by nine.
The mom across the hall had driven up again from Lexington, with her son in his ball cap.
"I'm not missing this," she said. "I have been waiting for this since October."
The dad with the toddler. The grandmother in her church hat.
The mother of the girl who only ate pink things came with her sister from Toledo.
