Chapter 15: Jin
The infirmary storeroom smelled of iodine and clean cotton.
Gong Ting lay on a camp cot under a gray blanket with his left shoulder bound in white from neck to ribs.
His eyes were open.
He had refused the sedative.
The doctor had told Bai Jin that twice on the stairs, in a flat furious voice.
Then she had put a key in his hand.
"Fifteen minutes," she had said. "He is not to move that arm."
Bai Jin shut the door and stood against it.
"You cut my rope," said Gong Ting.
"Yes."
"I told you to stay on my arm," said Gong Ting.
"I know."
"Under fire, my word."
"I know the rule," said Bai Jin. "I wrote the rule."
"Then why?"
"Because it was a plan, not a fight." His voice came out smaller than he wanted.
"I'd have told you. There wasn't time. I thought if I asked you'd say no."
"I would have," said Gong Ting.
"And Qi would have taken the building."
Gong Ting looked at the ceiling.
His jaw worked, and a muscle jumped in the side of it.
"I watched you walk away," he said, hoarsely. "In the dark. Toward the shutters."
"I thought, he's going to put his hand on that switch and it will break him."
"And I was on a staircase with a hole in me and I couldn't get there."
