Chapter 21: No Contract for This

"I want the contract over," Ysmerelle said.

She said it in the middle of the great hall.

The wreck of the dragon steps lay at her feet, and Orivelle was pretending to sweep it.

Caerovan did not move.

"Not broken," she said. "Finished."

"You don't owe me a hostess, and I don't owe you a fiancee."

"The house stays mine," she said. "I'll go on helping your sister for as long as she wants me."

"Finished," he said.

"And after that, I'd like to be courted."

He blinked.

"By whom?"

"By a man I'm not engaged to." She tilted her head. "He'd have to ask."

"May I?"

"Yes. Tomorrow. Nothing grand."

He said it back to her in the voice of someone repeating an order.

"Nothing grand."

Orivelle dropped the broom.

Then the cellist came up with his bow and asked, with great politeness, whether the first waltz was now available.

"It is," Ysmerelle said. "Give me a minute."

She danced it with him, and it was a good waltz.

Caerovan stood at the edge of the floor with his hands behind his back.
