Caerovan was supervising the removal of fifteen cushions when his sister told him where Ysmerelle was.
"She's in the bookseller's," Orivelle said. "With the man who returned the book. They've been there an hour."
He stopped with a grape in his hand.
The old want came up in him whole and quick, with a voice already attached.
Send for her. Tell her the carriage is waiting. She has no business at a bookseller's when she could be with you.
He waited for the floor to rise toward his face.
Nothing happened.
He stood at his full height in his own gallery, with no wings and no tail and no punishment.
For the first time he understood what the curse had been doing for him.
It had been a hand on his collar.
Now there was no hand, and the want was exactly the same size.
"Are you well?" Orivelle asked.
"I'm in great danger," he said, "and nobody is going to catch me."
She put down her clipboard.
