Chapter 23: Carry My Bag
The town hall had a plain double door, a trestle table and a woman with a jar.
"Two coins each for the fiddler," she said.
Caerovan reached into his coat and discovered that a duke carries no small coins.
He offered a gold piece.
"I've no change for that," the woman said.
"Keep it," said Caerovan.
"The fiddler's paid for the year."
"Then keep it for next year."
She looked at the gold piece, then at him, and then she dropped it in the jar.
"Next year's fiddler thanks you," she said.
Nobody announced them.
Ysmerelle went through the door at his side, and the fiddler played on.
A stout man in a leather apron danced past with a girl in a straw hat.
The cellist had come, too, and was sitting at the end of the stage with a mug, off duty and beaming.
Caerovan stood at the edge of the floor and looked around.
He had never entered a room unannounced.
"I keep waiting for a bell," he said.
"There isn't one," Ysmerelle said.
