Chapter 22: Family Plot
The Penhallow family plot sat on a hill above the lake, under two old maples that had dropped all their leaves.
Saturday morning was cold and clear.
The grave was already open when we got there, a neat rectangle.
It lay beside a gray stone with two words cut into it, BELOVED FATHER.
Lorne stopped at the edge of the grass.
"I never noticed Dad's stone was this close to the water," I said.
"He picked it for the view."
The county had sent a plain pine box.
There were only four of us.
Lorne and me, Joy in her good navy blazer, and the old foreman with his cap in his fist.
The gravedigger leaned on his shovel at a polite distance.
The sheriff stood by the cemetery gate in a dark coat.
He hadn't come any closer, and Lorne hadn't asked him to leave.
I looked at the pine box.
Two weeks ago I had dug a hole in the dark with my own hands, for this man.
