Chapter 11: Thanksgiving

Geneva Hardaway's Thanksgiving table seats fourteen and has been set since nine o'clock that morning.

Dishes covered every inch of it.

"Don't touch the macaroni," Josiah said in my ear. "It's a weapon."

"It's a casserole."

"It is a family secret that has ended careers."

I was wearing a green dress.

I had made the sweet potato pie myself in his mother's kitchen, under her eye, from an index card in her handwriting.

She had watched me crimp the crust and said nothing, and that was the highest compliment I have ever received.

Now she stood at the head of the table with her hand on her chair and looked at the thirteen of us.

There were cousins, an uncle in a bow tie, two women from the choir in hats and a boy of nine.

The boy was under the table with a toy truck.

"Josiah Lee, say grace," she said.

"I'm going to ask Ms. Dunavant," Josiah said.

My mother-in-law, I thought, and shut that off.

Geneva turned her head.

"Ms. Dunavant," she said. "Josiah Lee. The girl has a first name."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Use it."

"Yes, ma'am," Josiah said, and did not.

She looked at him over her glasses for a long moment.

"Hmph," Geneva said.

The table went silent and looked at me.

I put my hand on the back of my chair.

I had not sung in front of a family since I was seventeen, and I did not know what I would do.

I opened my mouth, and what came out was the Doxology.

I sang it plain, in the alto line I learned in a church choir with Leeann.

Halfway through the first line, a deep bass voice came in underneath me.

It was Josiah.

He sang with his eyes shut and his hand on the chair.
