Chapter 31: The Ring
I didn't go to bed.
I walked down the pier in my bare feet with my green dress over my arm and my shoes in my hand.
Arlo heard me coming. He stood up fast and planted himself in front of Captain.
"You were supposed to go to bed."
"You said nothing. You never say nothing. You always say 'the boiler' or 'the bank.'"
"Tonight it's nothing."
"Your hands are covered in gold paint."
He looked down at them.
"That's from the horse."
"The horse was finished last year."
He closed his eyes.
"Noelle. I am begging you. Go upstairs. If you look at this saddle before noon tomorrow, Marigold will never speak to me again. She has a plan. There's a schedule. It's in purple crayon."
I bit the inside of my cheek.
"Noon?"
"Noon."
"Fine."
I went to bed.
I didn't sleep. I lay there grinning at the ceiling until he came in at three and pretended to be asleep beside me.
At eleven fifty-five the next day, Marigold came into the kitchen in her purple dress and rain boots and took my hand.
