Chapter 8: White

The howl came out of me and rolled down the valley.

It was long and low and clean, and it did not sound weak.

The tall student dropped his radio in the leaves.

"Go back to camp," Tobias said. He did not raise his voice. "Both of you. Now."

"Professor, was that her?"

"Now."

They went. I heard them crashing down the slope.

My hands were shaking, and my skin had gone too hot.

"Tobias, something is happening."

"I know." He stepped toward me and stopped an arm's length away. "Don't fight it. For once in your life, don't hold anything back."

"I've never been able to do this."

"You've been able to do it all along," he said. "You've just been tied to the wrong man."

Pain went through me, bright and total, from my spine to my fingertips.

I fell to my knees in the leaves. My back arched and my bones began to shift.

I had waited twelve years for it, and it was nothing like I had imagined.

It didn't tear. It poured.

Heat rushed along my arms, my legs and my jaw. Fur came up through my skin. The cold of the forest dropped away.

Then I was on four feet in the leaves, and the whole valley opened around me.

I smelled everything.

Birch sap, river mud, a hare two hundred meters off, the wool of Tobias's jacket and the smoke still clinging to his collar.

I lifted my head.

Tobias was looking up at me.

He was standing very still, with his hands loose at his sides. I came up higher than his waist.
