Chapter 17: The Crews

Seb's POV

I went to the plant on the night shift, because that was when Blake's trucks ran and the men I needed were awake.

It was the second week of December, and the yard lights buzzed in a cold fog.

For fifteen years I had gone out there to give orders in Blake's name.

I had never once gone to ask for anything.

The mustached foreman met me at the gate with his thermos.

I had not told him I was coming, and he did not ask why.

"Monsieur Seb," he said.

"I'd like you to stop calling me that," I said.

"Seb.

"I'm going to ask you something, and you can say no."

"Yes, Monsieur."

"Christmas Eve," I said.

"At the levee fire.

"I'd like the plant bosses there, every one of them, with their crews.

"I'd like them to come in their boots with their tools on their belts.

"I won't tell you why."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he looked at the haul trucks idling along the dock.

"The night route has a run that evening," he said.

"Mr. Blake's trucks go out at nine.

"The drivers would have to be at the fire."

"Then they'll be at the fire," I said.

"Mr. Blake will ask."

"Tell him the plant crews are going to the levee for Madame Celeste," I said.

"It's true."

His mustache moved.

"Four years I've waited for someone to say her name at this gate," he said.

"I'll bring every man on my shift."
