Chapter 23: Her Yard
I went to the yard on Monday morning in my own name.
I drove myself.
Ximun had put the truck keys in my hand at the kitchen door, off the hook where they had hung since March, and said nothing at all.
I stopped at the gate with the engine running.
The old sign still hung over the loading dock, white letters on a green board faded by thirty years of sun.
IRIONDO FEED & FREIGHT.
Under it, in a half circle, stood the whole crew.
There were forty of them.
They had come in early in clean shirts, and nobody was working.
The man with the gray mustache stood in front with his cap in his hand.
I got out of the truck.
I walked up through the gravel with my braid pinned up and the small green ledger under my arm.
"Miss Amaia," he said, and held out a key.
It was brass, on a loop of leather, with a paper tag on it in a hand I knew.
SCALE HOUSE.
I took it.
The next man stepped up behind him and held out another.
BARN.
I took it.
One by one they came, the drivers and the loaders and the boy in the hard hat.
Each of them put a key in my hand and said nothing, or said, "Miss."
When the last key was in my palm, the man with the gray mustache nodded to two of the drivers.
They went to the dock with a ladder and took down the old sign.
It came away from the wall with a long shriek of nails.
They laid it flat on the gravel, face up, and stood back.
I looked at my father's name, which was also mine.
"What do you want over the door, Miss Amaia?" said the man with the gray mustache.
"The same," I said.
"But I'll have the paint fresh."
A few of them laughed.
Someone began to clap, and stopped, and began again.
The whole crew took it up, slow and awkward, with their hands.
