Chapter 18: The Dock

The call came on a Thursday, from a number I did not know.

"Mrs. Kralj," a man's voice said, easy and friendly.

"I am a friend of your father's.

"I would like to buy you a coffee."

I was standing at the sink in Park Point with a cup in my hand.

It was nine days after the knock, and he had not stayed the night.

He had come three times to the flat over the bakery.

Every time he had left at ten, with his hat in his hand, because I had not asked him to stay.

I pressed the red button on the recorder in my coat.

"Which friend?" I said.

"A mutual one," said the voice.

"I work for people who do business with him.

"We would like to make this easy for you.

"A little misunderstanding.

"We are prepared to be generous."

"Where?" I said.

"The Petrovic dock, the foreman's shed," said the voice.

"Four o'clock.

"Come alone.

"You wouldn't want a scene in public."

"No," I said.

"I wouldn't."

I called Xander on the way, from the bakery door.

He picked up on the first ring.

"Do not go alone," he said, when I told him.

"I'm not going alone," I said.

"I'm going with a recorder and a pad.

"You and Ilija come in your own cars and park at the elevator.

"Wait for my signal."
