Chapter 20: The Night Before the Hall
We wrote my speech at the long kitchen table, with Rosalba's coffee and six pages of crossed-out lines.
Gemma sat across from me with her knees pulled up on the chair.
Luca stood at the window with his back to us.
"Start with the lie," Gemma said. "The Florida lie. It's the cleanest."
"Start with the contract," Luca said without turning.
"It's her speech."
"It's my sit-down."
"It's both," I said. "Sit down, Luca."
He turned.
I held his eyes across the kitchen.
"You asked me to choose who stands up tomorrow," I said. "I'm choosing three people. Me. Gemma. And you, at the end, when I say."
"When you say."
"When I nod."
His mouth thinned.
He wanted to command the room, and I could see him wanting it, with the whole length of his body.
"Gemma stays in the kitchen of the Villa until we call her," I said. "No one in that hall knows she's coming. My father thinks she's at the flat, scared."
"She's not scared," Gemma said.
"She's terrified."
"A little." She grinned. "I'll wear the coat."
Luca crossed the kitchen and sat at the table's end.
He pulled the pages toward him and read the top one.
He read it all the way down.
"It's good," he said.
"I know."
"It's very good," he said. "It doesn't once ask for mercy."
"Why would I?"
"Because the men in that room expect a woman to ask." His voice was low. "You're telling them he lost the right to do the asking."
