Chapter 30: Mrs. Vannelli, Twice
"My wife," Luca said, in the dark, with his mouth against my hair. "The woman who walks in by herself. The one who writes her own name."
"Again."
"The one who asks for what she wants," he said.
"Again."
He said it again, and again, in the bath, in the car, at breakfast with Rosalba pretending not to listen.
By the end of the week I believed him.
We were married a third time on the second Saturday of May.
I had meant for the second one, in the chapel, to be the whole of it.
Gemma said no.
"You had a garden wedding," she said. "It was lovely. Your mother's parish has not seen you since the funeral. You'll go to St. Rita's, and you'll go in the front door, and you'll do it in front of everyone who knew her."
"I don't want a fuss."
"You don't get to want that."
So I went.
St. Rita's stood on a corner in Dongan Hills with a green door and a bell that rang flat.
I had made my First Communion there, and been confirmed there.
I had sat in the third pew on the left on the day they buried my mother with her rosary wound round her wrist.
The pews were full.
Half of Staten Island was in them, because a wedding at St. Rita's was a wedding at St. Rita's, and the other half had heard.
The men who ran the waterfront sat on the groom's side with their hats on their knees.
The women from the Villa Calabria's kitchen filled the third pew on the left, all of them crying already, in hats.
Rosalba was in front in a black dress with a white lace collar, and a rosary, and a handkerchief the size of a pillowcase.
Silvio stood beside the altar in a grey suit.
