Chapter 32: A Key of Her Own
The key to the front door was brass, and it was mine.
I stood on the porch of the yellow house on the hill in Dongan Hills at seven in the morning, on the first Saturday of June.
I turned the key in the lock three times, just to hear the bolt.
It was not my father's stoop.
It was four blocks up from the brick house, past the church, on a street where the maples met overhead.
I had looked at nine houses before I chose it.
Luca drove me to every one.
He sat in the car at the curb while I walked through, and never once told me what he thought.
Each time I came out he asked the same question.
"Name?"
"Raffaela Maria Vannelli," I said.
"Good morning, Mrs. Vannelli. Did you like it?"
The ninth house had a porch with a swing, and a front door I could open from the street.

Upstairs it had a small room at the back with a window seat.
I stood in front of the window seat for about two minutes.
I did not say a word.
When I came down, Luca was already talking to the agent about the price.
I pushed the door open.
The hall was bare and bright, with dust floating in the sun.
It smelled of paint and new wood and the green of the pear tree.
I walked through each room slowly with my keys in my hand.
I had never in my life walked into a house and known that nobody would be moved out of it for me.
At eight o'clock a truck backed into the drive, and Silvio got down from the cab with a grim face.
"I'd like it on the record," he said, "that I was not consulted."
