Chapter 30: Sunday Dinner
Opal's kitchen on Sunday smelled of ham, collards and something burning.
"That's not the ham," said Opal.
"No, ma'am," said Beau.
He stood at her oven in one of her aprons, the yellow one with the sunflowers.
He held a pan out at arm's length with a pair of potholders.
The pound cake in it was black on the top and sides.
A thin gray smoke curled up toward the ceiling and made for the screen door.
"I followed the recipe," said Beau.
"Which recipe?"
"My grandmother's. It said three hundred and fifty degrees."
"For what?" asked Opal.
"For an hour."
"For forty minutes, son. The rest is on the card in her handwriting."
Opal took the pan out of his hands and looked at it.
"This is a hockey puck," she said.
"I made it myself," Beau said, with dignity.
"You certainly did."
I leaned in the doorway with a dish towel over my shoulder and could not stop smiling.
The house was full.
