Chapter 14: Director of Night Operations

I did not sleep.

At six-fifteen I put on a charcoal suit, took the penthouse elevator to the lobby, and walked straight past the front desk.

Shift change at the Grand happens at half past six.

Forty people stand in the lobby with their coffee: the night porters going home, the day housekeepers coming on, the desk staff, the bell captain, the kitchen crew in their whites.

I had done this walk a thousand times and never once stopped in the middle of it.

I stopped in the middle of it.

"Good morning," I said.

The lobby went quiet.

I turned and crossed the marble to the revolving door.

Mateo was on the sidewalk outside, on the bench by the planters, in the same rumpled suit.

He had not gone home.

He looked up as I came through the door, and he stood.

"You shouldn't be out here," he said.

"You should be in there."

"Ingrid, your father."

"Walk with me."

He walked.

I brought him through the revolving door and across the lobby and stopped him under the chandelier, where everyone could see.

"I need everyone's attention for one minute," I said.

Nobody was looking anywhere else.

"Last night, Mr. Soto was escorted out of this building on the chairman's order."

I heard a cup set down somewhere.

"As chief operating officer, I'm reversing that order. Mateo Soto is now Director of Night Operations, with a salary to match, reporting to me."

A murmur went around the room.

The head of security stood by the front desk with his hands behind his back and his eyes on the floor.

Then my father's voice came from the elevator bank.

"Ingrid."

He crossed the lobby at an easy pace, in a fresh navy suit, followed by two men from legal.
