Chapter 28: Custody
The sidewalk went quiet around us.
The woman in foils had lowered the letter.
Her phone was still up in her other hand, and the red light was on.
"Say it again," I said.
Alyssa blinked.
"Say it again. She's recording. Say it slower."
Alyssa looked at the phone.
She looked at the women in capes on the curb behind her, all of them staring.
Then she turned around and walked back across the street without looking for cars.
She pulled at the taped notice on her own door, but it was on the inside of the glass.
She couldn't reach it.
She stood there with her hand flat on the door and the ring on her finger, and the women in capes watched her do it.
The woman in foils found me before we left.
She sent me her video at the corner.
Half a minute.
Every word.
Sam played it in the car with the engine off.
He didn't say anything when it ended.
He held my hand on the gearshift all the way back across the bridge.
On Thursday night the ranger called.
"The prosecutor's ready," she said. "Tell him yes."
"To the gala."
"To the gala. Tell him tomorrow, where people can hear you."
