Chapter 14: What She Will Say

Tobias's POV

My sister lived in a one-story house at the end of a gravel road, four hours north, with a woodpile and a dog.

I drove up on Sunday morning, because I did not want to say what Colt had threatened over the phone.

She was on the porch when I pulled in, leaning on her cane, with her coat buttoned to the chin.

She did not wave.

She had not waved at me in nine years.

"You look terrible," she said.

"I drove four hours."

"You've looked terrible since the engagement party. Come in."

The kitchen was warm.

There was a pot of soup on the stove and a window over the sink that looked out at the lake.

She sat down slowly and eased her left leg out straight under the table.

The plate in her hip had been in for eleven years.

I had never once seen her sit without checking where it was.

"Colt called my office," I said. "He wants me to drop everything. He says he has a video about you."

She said nothing.

"I think it's a bluff. I think he means to scare us out of the gala."

"It isn't a bluff," she said.

I looked at her.

"He filmed me," she said. "Years ago. Not that night. A year after. Conor came to see me at the clinic while I was learning to walk again. He said he wanted to apologize."

My hands went cold on the table.

"You never told me."

"I never told anyone. He brought Colt. Colt held the phone up the whole time, and Conor cried." Her voice stayed level. "I said something I'm not proud of. I begged them to leave me alone. I said they could say it was nobody's fault if they would only stop."
