Chapter 14: Morning

I held the ring on its chain and did not say anything for a while.

It was warm from his skin.

"Four years," I said finally. "You wore that every day?"

"Every day."

"Through the whole bar? The fish fry? Susie's kitchen?"

"Under my shirt." He looked at the ceiling. "Susie saw it the first week."

"What did she say?"

"She said a man who hides a ring that carefully has somebody to go home to."

I let go of it.

The window had gone from grey to white, and a garbage truck ground along Dorchester Avenue.

"It was my cards," Declan said.

I turned my head on his chest.

"The cards that found me. I want to say that out loud, and not in a kitchen at three in the morning with your fist in my shirt."

"Say it."

"I wrote to you four times. Your father opened them, and he read the postmarks, and he sent you up the coast with an address in your hand."

"Declan."

"I put Susie in that alley, Hallie." His voice didn't rise. "I didn't ask you for the card back, or for anything. But I need you to hear that I said it was you, and I knew in my gut it was wrong, and I said it anyway because you were standing there and I couldn't stand to look at me."

I sat up with the sheet against my chest.

"You made me carry it for a month."

"Yes."

"I saw that alley every night. I took a slap in front of a church. I carried a folding chair for the woman who hated me, because it was the only thing she would let me do."

"I know."

"You watched me do it."

"I watched, and I let you." He sat up too. "I have no defense."
