On Monday morning Nan read the post to me over pancakes, in her loudest voice.

"Lydia Lowell, who slammed her wedding ring into her husband's birthday cake, is said to have drained one point one million dollars from the Lowell family accounts before storming out."

She flipped the phone around.

"They've got a picture, babe."

It was the lobby of the Lowell Grand on Saturday morning, taken from the ceiling camera.

Elias Colquitt stood close in front of me with his hand held out, and mine was raised in the air between us.

The caption said: "Day one, a ring in a cake. Day two, a new man."

"He was handing me a business card," I said.

"I know. You know. Twelve million people don't."

The comments ran for pages.

Gold digger, one said, and gold digger again, and two women arguing about whether I looked cheap in the green dress.

I put down my fork.

I had never taken one dollar from the Lowell accounts.

I had a credit union account in my maiden name, and it held my father's insurance money, and that was all.

"Is that how it's going to be?" I said. "She fed it to them?"

"She fed it to them with a spoon." Nan stabbed a pancake. "I could bake her a cake, too."

"Nan."

"A very small one. With salt where the sugar goes."
