Chapter 9: The Next Room
On Friday night the ballroom was a concrete slab with one work lamp on a stand.
I was on my knees in the middle of it with a roll of blue tape, marking out where the round tables would go.
Fifty-two tables, ten chairs each, with a lane for the servers down the center.
Elias stood at the edge of the light with his sleeves rolled up and a cup of coffee for me that he had not yet found a place to put down.
"You've left the east wall bare," he said.
"That's where the dessert room goes."
"Dessert room?"
"People want to leave a wedding with something in their hands. You'll thank me in March."
He set the coffee on the floor beside me.
I picked it up and drank it.
It was just how I took it, and I did not ask who had told him.
"Can I ask you something?" I said.
"You're going to anyway."
"The morning you came to the Lowell lobby, you called me Ms. Farrington. Nobody in that building had ever said it. That name was only on the card."
He didn't answer right away.
"The card," he said.
"Only the card, and the staff at that restaurant."
He looked at the dark window at the far end.
"I was in the next private room," Elias said. "I had a dinner with two investors, and they had gone to find the car."
The tape roll slipped out of my hand.
"You were next door."
"I saw the manager go in with his tablet. I heard the voices through the wall." He turned the cup in his fingers. "I thought it was a family matter, and I stood in the hall with my coat on and told myself that."
