Chapter 12: What He Never Told Her

He put a gray metal box on the kitchen counter.

It was the size of a loaf of bread, and a bank's brass tag hung from the lid.

"Open it," Elias said.

The key on my father's leather tag fit the lock.

It turned with a click that I felt in my teeth.

Inside lay a stack of yellowed papers tied with string, a pocket watch, and a single sheet with a gold seal.

At the top, in blue ink, was my father's slow, square handwriting.

*I, Frank Doheny, leave forty percent of Langston and Company to my daughter, Joanna Marie Doheny.*

*It is to be hers alone on her thirtieth birthday.*

I read it three times.

"This is what Desmond said was lost," Elias said.

"The trust he's been managing is built on a copy."

"The original names you only. No husband, no guardian, no signature but yours."

"Where did you find it?"

"A bank in the old part of the city, under your father's name."

"The fees were paid by a man who died last winter."

"I spent nine months writing letters to get that box opened."

I put my hand on the pocket watch.

It was warm from the kitchen lamp, and it was my father's.

My eyes burned.

"You did this for me."

"Yes."

"You tried to buy the trust for me."

"Yes."

"And you knew three years ago."

He stood still.

"Say it," I said.

"I knew before I hired you."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"Your father's name came across my lawyer's desk," Elias said.

"I had been looking for Frank Doheny's family for six years."

"He was the only man who could have proved what Desmond did to my father."
