Chapter 19: The Vote

At nine o'clock I walked into the Langston boardroom in the black suit Elias's housekeeper had pressed at seven.

Twelve directors sat at the long table, and Desmond sat at the head of it.

He wore a hospital bracelet under his cuff, and a cane leaned against his chair.

His lawyer sat at his elbow with a thick folder.

Elias came in behind me and took the seat at the far end.

He didn't speak, because I had asked him not to.

"Mrs. Stannard," Desmond said. His voice was thin, and his eyes were not. "You're early. The vote is for the sale."

"I know what the vote is."

"The trust passed to you at midnight, and I'm told your papers are in order. But a first-day shareholder has no standing to stop a sale already called."

"She holds forty percent," said the oldest director slowly.

"And her husband's thirty went to her on Tuesday," said another.

Desmond did not look at either man.

"Then she is outvoted by the thirty I hold and the seats I appoint."

"No," I said. "The company's bylaws let a seventy percent holder appoint every seat."

The lawyer's pen stopped moving.

I put my hand on the back of Desmond's chair.

"You're sitting in mine," I said.

He did not move.

"Mr. Langston," Bea said brightly from the door, where she was holding a stack of bound booklets. "Security is just outside. I asked them to come by in case you needed a hand."

Two guards in gray jackets appeared behind her.

Desmond stood by himself, slowly, leaning on the cane.

I sat down in the chairman's seat.

It was cold from the air-conditioning, and the leather creaked.

"I call this meeting to order," I said. "The first item is the sale."
