Chapter 14: What I Called Him

Dahlia's POV

The grief did not come at the pit.

It came on Monday at four in the morning, when I woke in Donal's bed.

I reached for the wall to push myself up, and my hand shook so hard I couldn't.

He was awake.

I think he had not slept.

He turned on the lamp and said nothing, and I sat up with the sheet in both fists.

"I called him a coward," I said.

"Dahlia."

"On the bus. Out loud, in my dress, to a woman with a shopping cart."

My voice went high and thin.

"I called him a spineless, lying, sock-wearing little clerk. I said I hoped he got a flat tire in Ohio."

"Ohio," Donal said.

"I don't know why Ohio."

I started to laugh and it turned over in my chest and came out as something else.

He sat up and pulled me into his lap, and I put my face in his neck and shook.

"I said it every morning," I said. "In the shower. Over the stove. I said it to the bay."

"I know," he said. "I heard you."

"I said I'd break a plate on his head."

"I know," he said.

"He was in a trunk."

I could not get my breath around it.

"He was in the dark for eleven months, and I was cursing him."
