Chapter 16: The Floor
The owner blew her whistle once, long, and the whole six a.m. floor went quiet.
Twelve people stood in a loose half circle by the squat rack with their water bottles in their hands.
I knew most of them by their shoes.
There was the retired cop who deadlifted at six, and the two nurses who came after their night shift, and a girl with a braid who always did her stretching on the turf.
Travis stood at the front in a new gym shirt, holding his phone up in front of his chest with the camera lens out.
The little red light was on.
"Members," the owner said. "This is an informal review. Mr. Curry has made a complaint, and my insurance carrier has asked me to hear it where it happened."
She put her hands on her hips.
"Mr. Curry. Say it."
"I'm only concerned," Travis said. He turned a little, so the phone could see the room. "I joined this gym because I care about a woman I used to be engaged to. And I watched a trainer put his hands all over her in front of a class."
Nobody spoke.
"That's a violation of your policy, ma'am. It's in writing. Trainers can't date clients."
"It is," the owner said. "Ms. Ruelas?"
