Chapter 18: The Pool
The side gate was open at eleven.
He stood on the flagstones in his shorts with two folded towels against his chest.
I was already at the edge of the water.
The pool light was off.
The mesquite hung over the fence and over half the yard.
The only glow came from the sky above the neighbors' roofs and one bathroom window two houses down.
Every other window on the street was dark.
"Towels on the lounge chair," I said, very low.
He set them down.
He turned to face me, and I took the hem of his T-shirt and drew it up over his head.
"New rule," I said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"It's whispers only. My neighbor's bedroom window is eleven feet from that fence," I said.
"Who's the neighbor?"
"A man who calls the HOA about my trash cans," I said. "If either of us makes a sound above a whisper, I stop."
"What if it's both of us?"
"Then I stop twice."
His mouth twitched, and he shut it hard.
I undid the knot of my robe and let it fall onto the flagstones.
The air was cool on my skin.
The whole backyard smelled of chlorine and dust and the sweet yellow blossoms on the mesquite.
I went down the steps into the water first.
It was cold.
It closed around my ankles, then my knees, and I hissed through my teeth and kept going until it reached my waist.
He came in behind me.
I heard him suck in a breath when it hit his thighs.
"It's April," he whispered. "Nobody swims in April."
"I do."
"It's sixty-eight degrees," he whispered.
"Then your problem is that you're a trainer who's afraid of cold water."
"Not afraid," he whispered. "I'm counting."
I laughed into my hand.
I turned and walked backward through the water to the shallow end, where the pool edge ran along the deck.
