Chapter 15: Seven Years Late

Quinton unlocked his door without another word, and I followed him in.

I did not go to my room.

I sat on the edge of the sofa in Quinton's living room with my hands between my knees.

He stood at the window with his back to me.

"I should tell you what I said to him," Quinton said.

"At the engagement party."

"Yes."

"You told him not to marry me."

"I told him, don't marry her unless you tell her the truth." He turned. "I thought you were choosing him with your eyes open. I thought you knew exactly who had called you."

"I thought it was you who was cold."

"I was cold."

"Because you thought I'd read your napkin and picked him."

"Yes."

His voice shook on the word.

"I gave you my number and I went to stand by the door," he said. "I watched you laugh at something he said. I watched you leave on his arm."

"I never saw the napkin."

"I know that now."

"I don't even remember putting it in my pocket."

"Linnea, for seven years I thought you had simply preferred him."

"And I thought you couldn't stand the sight of me."

"I couldn't stand what it did to me."

He said it quietly, and then he looked down.

"That's my answer to your question," he said. "That's the one I started at the gallery."

I stood up.

I went to my room and came back with the blue folder from my duffel.

It held our marriage license, the photographs from the rooftop, and the vendor receipts I could not bring myself to throw away.

I had grabbed it on the way out of the penthouse without thinking.

I opened it on the coffee table and pulled out the license.

Something small and white slid from behind it.

It was a cocktail napkin, soft with age and folded in half.
